The new Constellation Research generic shortlist for Master Data Management (MDM) is out.
Compared to the previous list Semarchy is a new entry which follows up their up-right move in The Latest Gartner MDM Magic Quadrant. So, another acknowledgement of the Semarchy Intelligent Data Hub concept. It is good to see that someone I started to blog about 8 years ago is now going to the top of the market.
Else IBM, Informatica, Reltio, Riversand, Stibo Systems and Tibco EBX stays on the list.
Constellation Research has now realized, like Gartner also did some while ago, that Oracle has left the MDM market. Thus the Oracle expansion on the previous shortlist is now followed up by a goodbye.
Fun fact: The guys who started Semarchy left Oracle a decade ago with the aim to build a better MDM solution as told by FX Nicolas of Semarchy in this interview.

Hi Henrik,
What I see in the marketplace the absence of IBM, just like Oracle. I feel it’s not reflected correctly in the ShortList as I hardly see them in the field.
Due to a lack of in-depth (or even high level) research behind this report, it is hard to say how vendors make it or miss it from here. It will be great if Constellation Research provides some context into the criteria they apply.

Thanks for adding in Prash.
I was indeed puzzled by what methodology that allowed Oracle to stay in there for so long.
Also, I run a model for ranking vendors as well. This does not make a generic ranking of MDM solutions as I do not find that very useful when an organization is on the look for a solution. Instead the model makes a suggestion based on the individual context, scope and requirements. A shortlist (longlist or PoC candidate) will of course in some cases include one of the solutions from IBM – and SAP MDG, the mega-vendor not making it to the Constellation Research generic shortlist.
From my participation in and observance of MDM RFP processes it is also obvious that the selection of a mega-vendor is often based on the overall relationship (or dependency) with that vendor and not so much a comparison of their MDM offering against other solutions available on the market.
